Hypothecation

The pledging of securities or other assets as collateral for a loan; securities in a margin account, for example, that are used as collateral for money loaned from a brokerage. Hypothecation also refers to the use of revenues from a particular tax for a particular purpose. For example, owners of television sets in Britain are charged a licence fee which is used to fund public broadcasters such as the BBC.
