Marginal Cost

The marginal cost of an additional unit of output is the cost of the additional input needed to produce the extra unit of output; for example, cost of the leather and labour needed to produce an extra pair of shoes. Manufacturers keep a close eye on marginal costs in order to calculate optimum production levels and maximise economies of scale. Also known as incremental cost.
